Field of View Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate the projected field of view of an OPS243 radar sensor on a flat, straight road. Enter the sensor mounting position, vertical and horizontal aiming angles, road position, lane width, and measurement units. The calculator estimates the FOV center point, effective FOV length and width, and the approximate distance a vehicle would travel within each lane while inside the sensor’s projected coverage.
How to Use the Calculator
- Select Metric (m) or Imperial (ft) units.
- Enter the mounting height of the sensor above the road.
- Enter the sensor vertical angle, measured downward from horizontal.
0°is parallel to the ground. - Enter the sensor horizontal angle, which describes how far the sensor is aimed into the road.
- Enter the perpendicular distance from the sensor to the roadway centerline.
- Select whether the sensor is mounted on the left or right side of the road.
- Enter the full lane width. The calculator uses half of this value to position the lane centerlines on either side of the roadway centerline.
- Review the Road View or Full FOV diagram.

Understanding the Results
- FOV Center Point estimates where the sensor’s center ray intersects the road. If that point is beyond the usable range, it is limited to the 100 m sensor range.
- Effective FOV Dimensions show the projected coverage length and width within the usable sensor range.
- Lane Lengths estimate the distance a vehicle would travel within each lane while inside the projected FOV.
- The sensor’s maximum modeled range is 100 m. At vertical angles of
12°or less, the road footprint is calculated as a range-limited conic projection rather than an unbounded ellipse.
The diagram shows the sensor position, roadway, projected FOV, center ray, lane coverage, and lane direction markers. The model does not account for road curvature, grade, vehicle dimensions, or 3D perspective.
